بيئة مبنية صديقة للبيئة في الشرق الأوسط

إن الدوافع الرئيسية للوصول نحو بيئة مبنية خضراء في الشرق الأوسط هي  بطبيعتها دوافع اقتصادية. تحوز المباني الخضراء والموفرة للطاقة على إقبال متزايد في المنطقة بسبب ارتفاع أسعار الطاقة والحاجة الى حلول أكثر كفاءة وبأسعار وإجراءات معقولة ضمن قطاع الإنشاءات. يجد مطورو العقارات الكبار في هذا أدوات جديدة للتسويق وجذب المستهلك تزيد من مبيعاتهم وتعكس التزامهم بتحقيق أهداف التنمية المستدامة والمسؤولية البيئية. من جانب العرض، فإن الموردين ومقدمي الخدمة يجدون فرص عمل جديدة في هذا التحول في السوق مما جعله دافعا لتقديم خدمات ومواد جديدة.

الوضع في الأردن

الأردن هو أحد البلدان غير المنتجة للنفط، وهو يسعى جاهداً  لتحقيق أهداف طموحة في مجال كفاءة استخدام الطاقة والطاقة المتجددة للتغلب على ما يواجهه من تحديات في قطاع الطاقة. علاوة على ذلك، فهو أحد أكثر البلدان التي تعاني من شُح المياه في العالم. تعد المباني الخضراء واحدة من العوامل الرئيسية الممكِنة لإيجاد الوظائف الخضراء، وتوفير الطاقة، وتحفيز الابتكار في التكنولوجيا النظيفة. اليوم، الأردن يحتضن 19 أبنية مسجلة ضمن نظام  LEED  (شهادة القيادة في الطاقة والتصميم البيئي)، 7 مبان منها هي فعليا مبان خضراء حائزة على شهادة LEED المعتمدة عالميا (4 ذهبية، 1 بلاتنيوم و2 فضية). ويجذب هذا القطاع العديد من المهنيين الأردنيين للحصول على الشهادة واختراق الأسواق المحلية والإقليمية كمحترفي LEED. لغاية تاريخه، يوجد 164 Green Associate) (LEED و 53 محترف (AP LEED) إلى جانب عضو هيئة تدريس في مجلس الأبينة الخضراء في الولايات المتحدة (USGBC)؛ يعمل معظمهم في مشاريع في المنطقة العربية.

لدى الحكومة والقطاع الخاص والمنظمات غير الحكومية الرغبة القوية لتمكين هذا القطاع من خلال الدعوة لوضع وتفعيل تشريعات وكودات بناء خضراء  فضلا عن بناء القدرات وزيادة الوعي بين مختلف الفئات المستهدفة. كما تدعم الجهات المانحة والمنظمات الدولية هذه الجهود خاصة ضمن برامج دعم قطاع الطاقة عن طريق تقديم المساعدة التقنية وتمويل المشاريع الريادية. في حين أن مدن مثل مدينة عمان قد شرعت في التوجه نحو المباني الخضراء كجزء من استراتيجياتها الخاصة بالاستدامة، واعتمدت حوافزا لتشجيع ممارسات البناء الأخضر؛ إلا أننا ما نزال بحاجة للتحرك نحو تشجيع مدن أخرى لتبني مثل هذه البرامج وترسيخ هذا التوجه ضمن البلديات المختلفة.

خواص الأبنية الخضراء

المبني الأخضر هو المبنى الذي يراعي الاعتبارات البيئية في كل مرحلة من مراحل البناء، وهي التصميم، التنفيذ، التشغيل والصيانة، والاعتبارات الرئيسية التي تراعى هي تصميم الفراغات وكفاءة الطاقة والمياه، وكفاءة استخدام الموارد، وجودة البيئة الداخلية للمبنى، وأثر المبنى ككل على البيئة.الفرق الرئيسي بين المباني الخضراء والمباني التقليدية هو مفهوم التكامل، حيث يقوم فريق متعدد التخصصات من المتخصصين في البناء بالعمل معا منذ مرحلة ما قبل التصميم الي مرحلة ما بعد السكن لتحسين خواص الاستدامة البيئية للمبنى وتحسين الأداء والتوفير في التكاليف.

المباني الخضراء توفر العديد من المزايا للعديد من الجهات المعنية بصناعة البناء، بما في ذلك سكان المباني والمجتمع ككل.المباني الخضراء تشمل في العادة جودة هواء أفضل، اضاءة طبيعيه وفيرة، توافر اطلالات، ومكافحة الضوضاء والتي تفيد شاغلي المبنى، مما يجعل هذه المباني مكان أفضل للعمل أو المعيشه.

من السمات الاساسية في المباني الخضراء التشديد على حماية التوازن البيئي الموجود، وتحسين البيئات التي قد تكون قد تضررت في الماضي. عادة ما تشيد المباني الخضراء في الأراضي الحساسة بيئيا، مع أخذ التدابير اللازمه لاستعادة الحياة النباتية. والمباني الخضراء أيضا تستفيد من أقل قدر ممكن من المواد، من خلال تصميم جيد واهتمام بإزالة المواد غير الضرورية في التشطيبات. وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، بناء تلك المباني يرشد في استخدام المواد وكذلك إعادة تدوير المياه.

وقد أسهمت الزيادة في الأمراض التنفسية والحساسية والمواد الكيميائة التي تطلق الغازات في الهواء، في زيادة الوعي على أهمية الهواء داخل المنازل. المباني الخضراء تركز ايضا على تقليل الأمراض التنفسيه والحساسية عن طريق تحسين الهواء داخل المنازل عن طريق التحكم في مصادر التلوث وتقليلها والقضاء عليها من خلال التنقية والترشيح.

تعد منظمات LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), BREEAM (BRE Environmental Assessment Method) وايضا Green Globes أشهر منظمات التقييم والتقدير في العالم. الاستدامة اصبحت من أهم الاهداف في منطقة الشرق الأوسط، فدول مثل قطر والأمارات العربية المتحدة ولبنان اصدرت نظم خاصة بهم لتقييم المباني الخضراء، تشتمل على الخصائص الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والبيئية والثقافية في العمارة. النظام الشامل لتقييم الاستدامة القطري GSAS يعد من أشمل النظم العالمية للتقييم، بينما النظام التقييم الخاص بأبوظبي  PRSحصل على مكانة خاصة في قطاع المباني الخضراء العالمي.

لتلخيص ما سبق، المباني الخضراء ليست تقدم فقط استدامة انشائية وبيئية، ولكن ايضا تقدم الكثير من المنافع والفوائد لمالكي المباني ومستخدميها. فتكاليف البناء المنخفضه وتكاليف التشغيل المنخفضه والراحه المتوفرة والبيئة الداخلية الأفضل صحيا، بالاضافة لتكاليف صيانة أقل وعمر افتراضي أطول، كل هذا يعد من خصائص المبنى الأخضر

Reflecting Upon Signs of God: Call to Climate Action

As over a billion Muslims celebrate Ramadan, the month of the Qur’an, it behooves us to reflect upon all the āyāt – verses or signs of God. God enjoins us over and again to contemplate every āyah (verse) of the Holy Quran, as in Surah Muhammad: ‘Do they not contemplate the Qur’an? Or do hearts have their locks upon them?’ (47:24). In Surat al-Mu’minūn, He says: ‘Have they not contemplated the Word, or has there come unto them that which came not unto their forefathers?’ (23:68). In Surat al-Baqarah we are told: ‘Thus does God make clear unto you the signs (āyāt), that haply you may reflect’ (2:219).

Contemplating and reflecting upon these āyāt of revelation shows us that there are many other āyāt upon which God calls humanity to reflect – the āyāt, or signs, in the created order. Just as God has ‘revealed the Book in truth’ (2:1762:213), so too did He ‘create the heavens and the earth in truth’ (45:226:73). Revelation and creation both come ‘in truth’ and convey to human beings the truth. Given their shared Source and shared message, the Qur’an is presented as a guide to help us reflect upon the āyāt of God within creation, as in verse 38:29, in which the Qur’an is referred to as ‘a blessed Book that We have sent down upon thee, that they may contemplate His signs and that those possessed of intellect may reflect.

Indeed, the Qur’an presents all of creation as signs of God: ‘And whatsoever He created for you on the earth of diverse colors—truly in this is a sign for a people who reflect’ (16:13). Nothing exists but that it is a means by which we can better understand the glory of the Divine. A bird, trees, the stars, the change from night to day —God is present in each of these.

Reflecting Upon Signs of God

Every part of creation, no matter how big or small, is like a word or letter in an ongoing revelation. The Qur’an speaks of the heavens and the earth being filled with ‘signs for believers’, ‘signs for a people who reflect’, ‘signs for a people who hear’, ‘sign for those who know’, ‘signs for a people who understand’, ‘signs for a people who are reverent’, ‘signs for those possessed by intelligence’, ‘signs for the possessors of intellect’, ‘signs for those who possess insight’, and ‘signs for a people who are certain’. This continuing message makes it clear that when the human being is sound in heart and mind, he or she is able to reflect upon the world of nature in a manner that increases both faith and knowledge.

In this vein God says, ‘We shall show them Our signs upon the horizons and within themselves till it becomes clear to them that it is the truth’ (41:53). This reveals a third group of signs upon which we are called to reflect, those within our souls, as in 51:20-21: ‘And upon the earth are signs for those possessed of certainty, and within your souls. Do you not then behold?

If we contemplate the āyāt of the Qur’an yet fail to contemplate the āyāt upon the horizons and within ourselves, we follow only part of the Qur’anic injunction to reflect upon God’s signs. We are thus among those regarding whom God asks rhetorically, ‘Who does greater wrong than one who has been reminded of the signs of his Lord, then turns away from them?’ (18:5732:22); and in another verse, ‘Who does greater wrong than one who denies the signs of God and turns away from them?’ (6:157)

A Call to Action

Given the state of the natural environment today, one cannot but conclude that we have indeed turned away and forgotten how to reflect upon the signs of God in the created order. Numerous scientific studies indicate that the balance of the world’s ecosystems has been compromised by our irresponsible and excessive consumption. This very balance is something that we are entrusted to maintain, as when the Prophet Shu`ayb enjoins his tribe, O my people! Observe fully the measure and the balance with justice and diminish not people’s goods, and behave not wickedly on the earth, working corruption’ (11:85).

Having failed to maintain the balance, today the āyāt that we witness speak to us not only of God’s glory, but also of our own corruption (fasād). Of such corruption we have been warned: ‘Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of that which men’s hands have wrought, so that He may let them taste some of that which they have done, that haply they might return’ (30:41).

Despite the ominous tone of this verse, there is a sense of hope in that by tasting some of what we have done, we might take heed by turning again to reflect upon God’s āyāt on the horizons and within ourselves. At this junction in history, when the fate of future generations lies in our hands, we must take heed of the Qur’anic injunction to ‘walk not exultantly upon the earth’ (17:63) and be instead the ‘servants of the Compassionate whom God says are those who walk humbly upon the earth’ (25:63).

Let us take the month of the Qur’an as a time to reflect upon all the āyāt of God and begin anew to live in harmony with them. ‘Has not the time come for those who believe to humble their hearts to the remembrance of God and that of the truth which has descended?’ (57:16)

Reasons Why Fracking is Environmentally Unsound

Fracking is, “the process of drilling down into the earth before a high-pressure water mixture is directed at the rock to release the gas inside” [1]. Fracking remains controversial due to its negative effect on the environment- especially in light of climate change. As such, it is necessary to explore the downsides of fracking as well as environmentally-friendly alternatives.

Negative Impacts of Fracking

Fracking is a very popular source of energy. However, it is unsustainable and wasteful.  This is as, “fracking uses huge amounts of water, which must be transported to the site at significant environmental cost” [1].

In addition, fracking is undesirable because it is dangerous to health. Environmentalists argue that, “potentially carcinogenic chemicals may escape during drilling and contaminate groundwater around the fracking site” [1]. Therefore, fracking should be discouraged insofar as there are better methods of generating energy.

Also, fracking, “places immense strain on transport and other infrastructure” [3]. This is as complex machinery is used in the fracking process. The alternative to fracking involves, “expanding wind farms and tidal” [3]. In the long-term, such environmental concern is associated with the development of “increasing energy efficiency and local energy schemes” [3].

Other side effects of fracking include, “fears over the venting and flaring of methane, industrialisation of rural areas and noise from lorries” [4]. All of these side effects negatively impact on quality of life. As a result, fracking is unpopular with many people. On a deeper level of analysis, fracking is closely linked to Climate Change.

For instance, fracking, “unlocks a whole new source of fossil fuels” [4]. Consequently, fracking comes with strong downsides. As such, it is viewed as environmentally unsound. This is as, “local environmental impacts are not just theoretical but well-documented” [4].

Alternatives to Fracking

As such, it is vital to explore alternatives to fracking. For example, “new and rapidly expanding sources of biomethane and heat energy are already delivering all over the UK” [2].

Biomethane and heat energy can be utilized throughout the world. Moreover, they meet higher standards of safety and sustainability with, “less environmental impact and much smaller carbon emissions than fracking” [2]. Therefore, research into renewable energy is crucial to solving current environmental problems.

To conclude, fracking is directly associated with many well-documented environmental problems.  Therefore, fracking should be avoided from an environmental perspective. In turn, renewable energy sources can be sought as an alternative to the current status quo.

What is Climate Change Disinformation?

For decades, the oil and coal industries and some of their largest industrial customers have conducted a sophisticated and wildly successful multi-million dollar campaign to convince the public that climate change is not a serious threat. The impetus for the climate change disinformation campaign has been to protect industry profits by blocking any action designed to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide and other global heating gases produced in burning fossil fuels.

Policies such as carbon taxes and carbon caps are intended to limit the release of carbon dioxide by restraining demand for fossil fuels. Fossil fuel companies, however, have correctly concluded that crimping fuel consumption would reduce revenue and would also erode the multi-trillion dollar value of their oil, coal, and gas reserves.

Fossil fuel industry leaders have long known that as policies to address the dangers of fossil fuel burning and climate change were progressively made into law and policy, they would ultimately affect profits. Anticipating these threats to their income and wealth, large fossil fuel energy companies—and those who have made common cause with them—decades ago mounted a well-funded campaign to discredit climate science. Its architects recognized that, if successful, the climate change disinformation campaign would provide the rationale for their political and legislative efforts to obstruct public policy efforts aimed at climate protection.

While the campaign has served and continues to serve a political and economic purpose for the industries behind it, it also serves the psychological need of reconciling industry’s economic interests with their version of climate science, climate economics, and the economics of climate protection. Thus those in the climate science denial camp believe themselves “on the side of the angels.”

In the political arena, the energy company campaign not only succeeded in confusing facts about climate change but also managed to undermine U.S. participation in the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, a precedent-setting international climate protection treaty discussed frequently throughout this book.

The industrial opposition to climate science and climate-safe energy policies has grown more sophisticated and varied over the past decade. The campaign operates through dozens of industry-funded institutes, policy centers, councils, research foundations, and societies that speak for industry on climate and energy. The climate “skeptics,” as they like to be called, include anti-government and anti-regulation conservatives and libertarians who oppose government action on ideological grounds. Their strategy has often been to hide ideologically based misrepresentations of climate science beneath a mantle of science.

A review of scientific publications on climate, however, reveals that whereas many thousands of high-quality scientific papers validated by peer review have been published documenting all phases of global warming, only a trivial number of dissenters who dispute the evidence have published in similar journals. Moreover, by contrast, the results of climate studies confirming global warming and humanity’s role in it can be found in the most prestigious scientific journals.

Climate change is profoundly affecting water resources in the Middle East

Almost without exception, the deniers’ reports appear in publications that are not peer reviewed, since their objections to climate science have been repeatedly refuted; thus they are of little interest to responsible, well-respected scientific publications. Finally, the national academies of science of most nations of the world have passed resolutions affirming that we are warming the planet.

In the initial stages of the climate debate, industry proxy organizations often flatly contradicted climate science and claimed, variously, that the Earth was cooling or at least wasn’t warming, or that if the Earth was warming, the warming wasn’t due to human activity, or that if the Earth were to warm, it would be mild and beneficial. Many of these discredited claims have been abandoned by all but diehard opponents of climate science as the global scientific consensus on climate change has strengthened and as the evidence for global warming has become overwhelming. Some climate change deniers still persist in presenting discredited arguments, however.

For example, industrial critics of decisive action on climate change (such as the National Association of Manufacturers in USA) made a case in Congress and with the public in 2009 that effective measures to reduce carbon emissions would bring economic disaster in the form of high taxes, lost jobs, lower productivity, and reduced competitiveness for America in world markets.

Since their arguments weren’t gaining traction in the world of science, industry-funded think tanks then spent millions of dollars making their case against climate science to more gullible media, government officials, opinion leaders, students, and the general public. Climate skeptics and their allies have thus become a major presence on the Internet, over radio, and on TV airwaves, as well as through industry-sponsored books, magazines, articles, reports, and press releases.

An unsuspecting person who uses an Internet search engine and enters terms commonly associated with climate change will be hard pressed to discern the truth amid the plethora of misleading information many of these organizations provide. Since some of the most effective arguments consist of deceptive statements wrapped in layers of truth, it can be very challenging for students and others without advanced scientific training or sophisticated rhetorical and analytical skills to sift truth from falsity without investing lots of time.

Waste Management Perspectives for Saudi Arabia

Solid waste management is a big challenge for the government and local authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The country generates more than 15 million tons of municipal waste each year with vast majority diverted to landfills and dumpsites. Recycling, reuse and energy recovery is still at an early stage, although they are getting increased attention. Recycling rate ranges from 10-15%, mainly due to the existence of the informal sector which extracts recyclables from municipal waste stream.

Waste management issues in the Kingdom can be resolved by creating a healthy general environment specifically targeting the waste sector which may consist of legislation, technology and socio-economic development.  The general environment in Saudi waste sector is ineffective and a major stumbling block for private investors and entrepreneurs. The onus should be on national environmental agency and local municipalities to build the desired environment to increase recycling rates and facilitate sustainable waste disposal.

Environment agency and municipalities should have close cooperation and seek assistance from other agencies as and when needed. Limitations of landfill usage should be created that prevent any wastes that could be recycled and take advantage of it. Although it is written clearly in the environment agency directive, the need of essential collaboration with cities’ authorities to apply it is important.

To begin with, the government should have a clear vision and a forward-looking strategy to be used as guidance for any waste management initiative. A good example is that of Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority in United Kingdom which put forward a Zero Waste strategy and then signed a 25-year agreement with a private company to create state-of-the-art recycling and waste management facilities across Greater Manchester across nine cities.

The second step would be to implement strict legislation and tough laws that are in line with the vision and aims of the waste management strategy for domestic as well as commercial sectors. Another critical step is to increase public awareness in order to encourage society’s collaboration towards environment protection and resource conservation. There is a dire need for concerted environmental awareness campaigns involving municipalities, educational institutions, corporate, Islamic scholars, electronic media and social networking sites.

Another key aspect would be to introduce source-segregation in Saudi Arabia so that household waste is collected in two different streams – recyclables and organic. Recyclables can be sent directly to material recovery facilities while organic wastes can be subjected to composting or anaerobic digestion, whatever feasible.
